The Lisbon Metro stations are remarkable for the quality, diversity, and originality of their artistic works. From the very beginning, the Lisbon Metro has invested in visual artists to beautify its platforms, ticket halls, and corridors. The importance of promoting and showcasing this valuable artistic heritage led to the creation of the Guided Tours: Art in the Lisbon Metro project.

Guided Tours: Art in the Lisbon Metro

Art in the Metro can make a difference in our daily lives… sparking imagination, provoking reflection, offering visual stimulation, or simply bringing a smile to our faces.

What would it be like if the journeys we take, over and over again, underground, lacked the presence of these artistic pieces and installations? Imagine the walls stripped bare of their gleaming tiles, the ceramic cladding so characteristic of our culture and artistic expression; the statues and colourful marble murals gone… life would surely feel a little greyer.

Every artistic manifestation in the Metro tells a story, captivates us, and has become part of our collective imagination. But do we really notice all the details during our daily commutes? Do we fully grasp their narratives, their meanings? Who are the artists that have left their mark here?

To answer these and other questions, getLISBON, in partnership with the Metropolitano de Lisboa, is promoting Guided Tours: Art in the Lisbon Metro, unveiling this rich heritage, which has become a point of pride for all Lisbon residents and a source of fascination and wonder for those visiting the city.

We are starting these tours with three guided visits in Portuguese, which include four stations: Parque, Marquês de Pombal, Campo Pequeno, and Entre Campos.

In due course, tours will also be available in English and French. For more information and group bookings, please email us at [email protected].
