A Romantic Residential Neighbourhood
Although the area of Campo de Ourique is not one of the most referenced places in travel guides, getLISBON finds good reasons to talk about it to its readers.
Campo de Ourique is situated between Amoreiras, Estrela and the vast romantic cemetery of Prazeres (terminus of the most touristic tramway 28). It is a residential neighbourhood, projected in 1880, that has commercial and intellectual dynamics which give it a very particular character.
Another of its peculiarities is that it isn’t a common stopover point, making this neighbourhood a distinct, quiet space, with a life of its own, but not any less appealing to a visit.
Did you know that here you can appreciate some of the most beautiful exemplars of Art Nouveau architecture? That in this area there is a church that encloses the remains of a saint? And did you know that you can visit the Casa Fernando Pessoa (the house where Fernando Pessoa, great Portuguese poet, lived for the last 15 years of his life, between 1920 and 1935)?
Also worth a mention are its cafes and traditionally famous sweets, the well-tended garden square, the diversified traditional trade or the market that combines tradition and modernity. These are many of the reasons that require an extended stay in this small “city” within the city of Lisbon.
