Today, we continue introducing you to the artists who are contributing their magnificent illustrations to our project that you can now support: LISBOA MARCA – a book of detachable bookmarks. In Lisbon in Us by Filipe Botelho, this young, dynamic, and irreverent architect, presents us with a stunning portrayal of Lisbon, the city that has shaped his artistic sensibility and perspective.

Lisbon

The city where I was born, raised, grew up, studied, made friends, worked, and fell in love. It has certainly been the stage for the most significant episodes of my life, although many other equally important and meaningful ones have taken place in other locations.

My interaction with the city began at a very young age, probably driven by the desire to explore different spaces on a skateboard. I believe it was this practice that sharpened my gaze, in search of something that would provide moments of enthusiasm and fun. It was crucial to understand and focus on the different elements that make up the city, such as park benches, stairs, handrails, and the varying levels of pavement, allowing for desired and exciting variations to execute a new trick. The realisation that polished marble pavement would provide a fast and smooth ride, in contrast to rougher, textured surfaces that caused an inconvenient tingling sensation.

I believe this experience brought me closer to the city and the places that define it, to such an extent that it later influenced my decision to study Architecture. Currently, my profession demands irreverence, uniqueness, and creativity, shaping my days as a constant search for something that excels in a specific detail.

As architecture is my daily activity, it helps develop the ability to synthesise and improve my drawing skills, positioning it as a useful and precise tool in the conception of ideas. Moreover, it aids in providing clients with a clear understanding of those ideas.

However, it was during the pandemic that I participated in the challenges launched by the Urban Sketchers group, allowing for a closer and virtual contact with the outside world. The experience was enriching, and as a result, I became a member of the group and started recording, in my sketchbook, various places in the city where I go.
